Most of us have heard the title Prince of Peace our entire lives. We picture something gentle. Pastoral. Quiet. A calm settling over a troubled situation. But the Hebrew behind this name is anything but gentle. "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6, NKJV 📖 About this name: The Hebrew behind Prince of Peace is Sar Shalom. And the word sar is not a gentle word. In the Old Testament sar almost always carries militaristic overtones a commander, a warlord, a military authority. This is the only place in all of Scripture where sar and shalom appear together. Which means the peace Isaiah was announcing was never meant to be passive. The Sar Shalom is the One who actively conquers every peace-disturbing force and secures shalom. And notice how His birth was announced. Not by a single angel with a soft message but by a heavenly host. That phrase heavenly host was the ancient military term for an army. Heaven deployed its forces to announce the arrival of the Commander of Peace. The shalom He brings is not the absence of trouble. It is completeness, wholeness, well-being in every dimension of life, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Earlier in this series, we discovered that Jehovah Shalom gave Gideon peace while he was still hiding in a winepress before anything had changed, before one circumstance resolved. That is the same peace the Sar Shalom offers today. Not the peace that arrives when things calm down, but the peace that holds you while they are still turbulent. The Kind of Peace This Name Actually Promises - Prince of Peace | Names of God | Isaiah 9:6
Moses stood at a burning bush in the wilderness and asked God a question most of us have asked in one form or another, who are You? What should I call You? Who sent me? God's answer was two words. And those two words changed everything. "And God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM.' And He said, 'Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.'" - Exodus 3:14, NKJV 📖 About this name: When God told Moses His name was I AM, He was not making a philosophical statement about existence. The Hebrew word behind "I AM" is ehyeh; it does not simply mean to exist in the abstract. In Hebrew, it means to be active, present, continuously engaged. God was telling Moses, "Tell them the One who is always here, always active, always present has sent you." Not the God who was. Not the God who will be. I AM, now. Fifteen centuries later, Jesus stood in the temple and said something that stopped the entire crowd. Before Abraham was, I AM. Not I was. I AM. Present tense. Applied to Himself. The contrast between the verbs was intentional and unmistakable. Abraham had a beginning. Jesus, as the eternal Word, did not. And the people who knew Scripture best, the ones who had read Exodus 3:14 their entire lives, immediately picked up stones. Not because they misunderstood what Jesus was claiming. Because they understood it perfectly. That reaction is the most important detail in this episode. The stones are not evidence of confusion. They are evidence of comprehension. Two words. Fifteen centuries apart. One Speaker. And what those two words mean for you today, in the silent season, in the unanswered prayer, in the ordinary chapter that does not feel like where God would choose to be, is that I AM has no other tense but now. He is not the God who was present in a better season. He is not the God who will show up when things improve. He is I AM, actively, continuously, personally present. Right here. When God Said His Name Was the Present Tense - I AM | Names of God | Exodus 3:14
Earlier in this series, we looked at Jehovah Raah, the LORD my Shepherd, the name David gave God in Psalm 23. Today, Jesus takes that same name and adds one word to it that changed everything. That word is good. And it means far more than you think. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." - John 10:11, NKJV 📖 About this name: When Jesus said I am the good shepherd everyone listening knew exactly what a shepherd was. Israel's greatest leaders had been shepherds. Abraham, Moses, and David were all shepherds before they were leaders. God Himself had been called Israel's shepherd throughout the Psalms. But Jesus did not just say I am the shepherd. He said I am the good shepherd. The Greek word kalos, translated as " good — does not simply mean morally correct. It means noble, wholesome, and beautiful in character, complete in every dimension of goodness that a shepherd could possess. And immediately, He drew a contrast. The hired hand, the one who tends sheep for pay, sees the wolf coming and runs. Because the sheep are not his. He has no personal stake in what happens to them. But here is the detail most people have never stopped to consider. In the entire Old Testament sacrificial system, sheep died for their shepherd's sin. That was the direction of sacrifice for thousands of years. The animal gave its life for the human. Jesus reversed it completely. The Shepherd gave His life for the sheep. That had never happened before. Not once. In all of history. The disciples scattered at Gethsemane. The hired hands fled. And Jesus stayed. Not because He had to, but because no one takes my life from me, He said. I lay it down of my own accord. The Good Shepherd did not stumble into sacrifice. Most of us have known the story of the cross for a long time. We grew up hearing it. We have sung about it. We believe it happened, and we believe it matters. But there is a difference between knowing what happened and finally understanding what was given. "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" - John 1:29, NKJV 📖 About this name: When John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world," every person standing there knew exactly what a lamb meant. From the very beginning of Scripture, when God provided an animal to cover the shame of Adam and Eve, to the Passover night when a spotless lamb's blood on a doorpost meant death passed over a household, to the daily morning and evening sacrifice in the Jerusalem temple where a lamb was offered for the sins of the people every single day for centuries every single one of those lambs was a sentence in a story pointing toward one final word. And that word was Jesus. But here is the detail most people have never been told. The moment Jesus died on the cross, the evening sacrifice was being offered in the temple. The trumpet that sounded every evening to mark the daily lamb sounded at the same moment the Lamb of God breathed His last. God did not leave that to chance. He closed fifteen centuries of sacrifice in a single moment on a Friday afternoon outside Jerusalem. And what God spared Abraham from doing to his son on that mountain, He did not spare Himself from. On the same mountain range. Centuries later. With His own Son. For you. Not for sin in general. Not for the world as an abstract category. For your specific sin. If God was going to show up in person, you would expect a throne room. A palace. At least a moment the world would recognize as significant. He chose a stable. An unmarried teenager from a forgotten town. And a name that had been waiting seven hundred years to be worn. "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, 'God with us.'" - Matthew 1, verse 23. 📖 About this name: In 735 BC, the prophet Isaiah stood before a frightened king and gave him a sign, not a military strategy, not an angel with a sword, but a name. A Child would be born, and His name would be Emmanuel. God with us. Seven hundred years passed. Empires rose and fell. Israel went into exile and came back. Four hundred years of silence followed, with no prophet, no fresh word from God. And then in a stable, in the last place anyone would think to look, a child was born, and Matthew reached back across seven centuries to say: this is the one. This is what that name was always pointing toward. But here is what most people have never noticed about Matthew's Gospel. It opens with this name Emmanuel, God with us, and the very last sentence Jesus speaks in the very last verse of the entire Gospel is the same promise in different words: "And behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Emmanuel is not just a Christmas name. It is the name that frames the entire story of Jesus from His first breath to His final promise. And what it means for you today is this: God does not wait for your season to become significant before He shows up in it. He shows up in the stable.
